Will Susie be a child forever? Or will she be able to continue to mature and grow in the afterlife, even though her life on earth is over? Will she spend her afterlife pining for the life she lost, or will she be able to move on, the way her family must also? She watches as the lives of those she has left behind continue, including her younger sister, Leslie, who passes her in age.

The movie also tackles a difficult question that has plagued people, religious and non-religious, for centuries: what happens when a child dies? Susie is very much a child whose life is just about to begin, when it is cut short. While I don’t necessarily agree with Alice Sebold’s visions of the afterlife, I think that a lot of people like to think about their loved ones as watching over them after they have passed and this movie really explored that whole idea in a deeper way, striking a balance between remembering and clinging to a lost loved one, forgetting and letting go. And it is a totally different and unique way of talking about death, from the perspective of the person that has died. The story seems to be about murder and solving a mystery but it is really also about love, loss, and grieving someone’s death. The importance I think is how the visuals are woven in with the story and the narrative, so that they are not superfluous but integral, telling the story along with everything else. Ten years later and I feel kind of jaded when it comes to visual effects now but this was one movie that made me feel less so. The dreamworld kind of reminded me of The Cell, a movie whose visual effects were so shocking and fantastic for their time (2000) that it amazed a lot of people, including myself. There were things that you knew couldn’t be real but they were so detailed and visceral that you couldn’t believe it could be made with a computer. The dream world is amazing and I repeatedly found myself slack-jawed in awe of the visual effects. She goes to this amazing dream world that is like heaven but not quite, and she can still look in on her friends and loved ones in the real world. Susie doesn’t quite go to heaven right away. I won’t give away the ending – I was pretty surprised.

The story is told by Susie Salmon, a fourteen year old girl who is murdered and after her death tries to communicate with her friends and loved ones to stop her killer. After all, nostalgia is misplaced when it comes to this story. The film is very true to the period without being overly nostalgic, which I appreciated. The period is early 1970’s, and it seems like every frame is filled with rich, saturated colors.

The movie is dark, but very beautifully made. The movie has pretty dark subject matter – not something I would normally choose to watch, but hearing about how awesome the book was, and on the strength of the cast and director and Oscar nominations, it was added to our netflix queue. Peter Jackson has been working on this movie for years, and he and his team were well-suited to the amazing visualizations in this film. I never read the book but it was a best seller by Alice Sebold. We watched The Lovely Bones, borrowed from Netflix on blu-ray. Saoirse Ronan as Susie Salmon in The Lovely Bones via
